The Empowerment Project: Ordinary Women Doing Extraordinary Things.
Image not being afraid to fail. What would you do? Well 5 female filmmakers asked themselves just that. They then drove cross country speaking to women that were one of few or pioneers in their chosen fields. The film makers dream were realized in the form of a film called The Empowerment Project: Ordinary Women Doing Extraordinary Things.
Funded though Kick Starter these lady and a mini van went from Los Angeles to New York in a month. Stopping along the way to document the lives other regular women that happen to be leaders in male dominated fields.
They spend a day in the life of many of the women highlighted in the film. Showcasing how these women had to go the extra mile to make it. Even the film's creators were forced to push pass their on fears to achieve briefly what these extraordinary women do daily.
I was introduced to the film though a screening presented by Nordstrom Chicago. I saw the shorter of the two version offered. It featured a Mathematician who was the funniest person I seen in a long time. A pilot who has been in her field for over 20 years and feels she's never worked. A professional athlete who overcame heart failure. A corporate leader turned chef. A Chicago architect pushing to been known simple by her work and not her sex or race. An agent for social change though a foundation called Girls on the Run. An Admiral in the US Navy who is still breaking though the glass ceiling by achieving the rank of 4 Stars with the film was still in production. An astronaut and Miss USA 2012.
I also was able to sit in on a Q&A section with the film's creators. They said the wanted to spark conversations regarding feminism, empowerment and balancing career and family. The film to me was great!!! Many of the women offered words of advise and encouragement. A few that stuck out to me was "Be bold and naive" "There's room for everyone" Find passion in your life not in your career".
The movie can currently only be seen though screenings. Many of which are open to the public. Go to indieflix.com/ Empowermentproject for screening locations and dates. You can find and follow the film of social media using the handle @EmpowermentDocu and hashtags #empowermentproject #Nordstromxindieflix #teptour #nordstromindieflix
